In a part two of her interview with John Lothian News for the John Lothian Profiles series, Amanda Cain discussed her founding of Male Allies for Women within the Americas Women’s Network. This initiative seeks to address gender diversity issues in corporate environments, particularly focusing on promoting women to director-level roles and above.

“With the help of some of my management, we did quite a lot of studies on what is blocking women from moving up the food chain and moving into director roles and above that,” Cain said.

Cain highlighted the need to study and understand the barriers that hinder women from advancing in their careers, including the existence of a gender pipeline issue. Despite efforts by companies to create gender-balanced pipelines, a challenge remains for women, especially those at the BP (Business Partner) level, in progressing to director roles. Research indicates that middle-level male management often creates barriers, contributing to this problem.

Furthermore, Cain emphasized the importance of appreciating women’s skillsets, promoting gender diversity, and recognizing the positive impact women have on a company’s financial success.

“We felt like we should create male allies for women to give men a better insight into not just the, I guess, how to behave with women, how to treat women, the value of women, and realizing that women were going nowhere without this middle level of men supporting women,” Cain said.

The initiative also aimed to create a safe space for men to discuss their concerns about working with women, considering the changing dynamics and expectations in the workplace. Cain shared her experience with a successful reverse mentoring program involving LGBTQ+ allies, where she had the opportunity to ask questions and engage in meaningful discussions, she said.

In addition to addressing gender diversity challenges, Cain discussed her transition from her senior position to becoming an executive coach. She emphasized the importance of helping individuals find their own solutions and plan for career transitions on their own terms.

Cain reflected on her career and expressed pride in achieving success in financial services without resorting to litigation or adopting a confrontational approach. She stressed her commitment to making the path easier for other women entering the industry.

Cain concluded the interview by highlighting the unique nature of coaching in the financial sector, where understanding risk, stress, and performance is crucial. She expressed her enthusiasm for supporting individuals in the financial business through coaching, recognizing the value of her experiences and insights.
