Sam Gaer’s Open Outcry History Was a Path To Electronic Trading

Sam Gaer’s Open Outcry History Was a Path To Electronic Trading

Sam Gaer’s foray into the futures industry began at the age of 15 when he sought a summer job and was recruited as a runner on the COMEX. Initially hesitant to wake up at 7 a.m. and commute from his suburban New Jersey home to New York, he swiftly relented upon learning of the $5 cash hourly wage.

His first day saw him working in the COMEX gold pit, running orders to brokers. Despite not really knowing what he was doing, by the end of the summer he had figured out how to chart prices. He also knew about taking orders from phone clerks, running them where they needed to go, what types of orders there were and where the more important orders went. He said, “I just kind of took to it.”

Nasdaq’s Randall Hopkins on driving value for companies through the ESG stakeholder ecosystem, the role of AI, and desired qualities in new hires

Randall Hopkins, Global Head of ESG Solutions, Nasdaq Corporate Platforms, spoke with Sally Duros for the John Lothian News ESG podcast.

Hopkins said Nasdaq sits at the nexus of the stakeholder ecosystem – the investors, corporations, raters and regulators who are all doing work around ESG. Nasdaq’s goal is to drive value through that stakeholder ecosystem. It does that, first, by helping companies set ESG priorities, and then second, on the operational side, by helping companies manage the data relevant to ESG and communicate its value.

HOU is the Domestic Crude Oil Benchmark on the Move

HOU is the Domestic Crude Oil Benchmark on the Move

Jeff Barbuto is trying to build a new benchmark in U.S. domestic crude oil at Intercontinental Exchange, where he has worked for 21 years running oil and is now the head of global oil markets. The benchmark is HOU, the Midland WTI contract for the Gulf Coast first started five years ago with the help of Magellan Midstream Partners.

Barbuto’s efforts to start building the new benchmark started 10 to 15 years ago as issues with supply gluts at Cushing, OK encouraged a solution to move oil from the middle of the country to the Gulf Coast.

In 2011, the Brent-WTI spread went negative for the first time, after running at about a two-dollar premium for the West Texas Intermediate the North Sea Brent crude over, Barbuto said. WTI would go as much at $25 below Brent in 2011 because of supply gluts in Cushing as more Canadian crude oil made its way to Cushing and more pipelines of crude were coming up to Cushing but not having an outlet, Barbuto said.
