At FIA Expo 2023, Pat Lunkes, the president of Parkway Consulting and a longtime human resources professional, moderated a roundtable discussion titled, “The Future of Work & Its Impact on the Industry in a Global Environment.”

The participants in the roundtable discussed working from home vs. the office.  Most of the people there had a hybrid work schedule and hoped to keep it that way, Lunkes said, although some would prefer to work from home full time. No one wanted to go back to full-time office work.

That preference came with complications for recruiting and training via Zoom, Lunkes said. Companies are trying to find ways to keep employees engaged and not to have attrition at six months after hiring, which seems to happen often, she said.

Another trend she sees is older people going back to the office while the younger ones are working from home.

JLN asked her how AI is impacting work, jobs, and companies. She said she got an AI program to write an excellent job description for a futures compliance officer, which could save firms a lot of money.

JLN also asked her what the biggest problem in our industry is, and she talked about what she sees as the “employment gap.”

She said that in her long and successful career she had made some mistakes, especially in the beginning. She said we spend so much time working that life is too short to be in a job you don’t like.
