Energy-related carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions in 2013 in the United States will be roughly 2% above the 2012 level, largely because of a small increase in coal consumption in the electric power sector, according to federal energy data, reported by Reuters. The U.N.’s top climate official levels both criticism and praise at China, the globe’s top emitter but one who’s doing something about it.

Quote of the Day:

“They actually want to breathe air that they don’t have to look at. They’re not doing this because they want to save the planet. They’re doing it because it’s in their national interest.”

–Christiana Figueres, executive secretary of the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change, in Bloomberg’s “Top Global Emitter China Best on Climate Change, Figueres Says”
