John Lothian News caught up with Leo Melamed during the FIA International Futures Conference in Boca Raton, FL, where he sat for a quick interview. He shared that he is currently writing a sequel to his 1984 science fiction book, “The Tenth Planet.”

Melamed also shared his views on the relationship between the U.S. and China and its significance. As an advisor to China, he mentioned that his advice has consistently favored globalization. However, Melamed noted a shift in China’s approach that he believes is not conducive. He stated that China is now experiencing the repercussions of this change.

He holds the Chinese people in high regard, just as he does the Japanese people. Melamed shared that the Emperor of Japan had bestowed upon him the highest honor given to a non-royal individual.

Melamed also mentioned that he remains the chairman of CMAC, the Competitive Market Advisory Council, a think tank at the CME Group. While acknowledging Terry Duffy’s commendable leadership, Melamed also remarked that the foundation laid by his predecessors had provided Duffy with “a pretty good institution that could blossom and go further” after 40 years.

In the last meeting of CMAC, discussions centered around AI, or artificial intelligence, which Melamed described as very appropriate and necessary. He emphasized that AI’s impact on trading and market direction would be minimal because trading lacks the comprehensive database required to replicate the capabilities of the human brain.
