The Options Industry Council (OIC) announced today that 386,428,255 total options contracts traded in May, which is up 2.35 percent compared to last year when 377,539,997 contracts were traded.
Average daily volume in May came in at 17,564,921 contracts, 2.35 percent more than the 17,160,908 contracts in May of last year. Year-to-date volume stood at 1,751,155,921 contracts, just off of last year’s 1,758,289,812 contracts by 0.41 percent.

CBOE Holdings May Volume is Highest for 2013

(NASDAQ: CBOE) reported today that May trading volume for options contracts on Chicago Board Options Exchange (CBOE) and C2 Options Exchange (C2) and futures contracts on CBOE Futures Exchange, LLC (CFE) totaled 107.14 million contracts, the highest monthly volume to date in 2013. Average daily volume (ADV) in May was 4.87 million contracts, up four percent from 4.67 million contracts in April 2013 and down four percent from 5.06 million contracts in May 2012.

Eurex Exchange recorded 51.9 million equity index derivatives contracts (May 2012: 76.6 million). The single largest contract was the future on the EURO STOXX 50® Index with 20.6 million contracts. The option on this blue chip index totaled 18.6 million contracts. Futures on the DAX index recorded 2.3 million contracts while the DAX options reached another 4.0 million contracts. The Eurex KOSPI Product reached 1.5 million contracts.
The equity derivatives (equity options and single stock futures) segment at Eurex Exchange recorded 60.5 million contracts (May 2012: 66.4 million). Thereof, equity options totaled 19.2 million contracts and single stock futures equaled 41.3 million contracts.
